LinesfromAfrica Short Story Competition Rules
Rules and Guidelines:
- Eligibility:
- The LinesfromAfrica Short Story competition is open to writers of African descent, regardless of their current place of residence.
- Participants must be at least 18 years old.
- Theme/Genre:
- There is an open theme, allowing participants to explore any subject or genre.
- Stories should reflect the diverse African experience, culture, or perspectives.
- Word Count:
- The maximum word count for submissions for the LinesfromAfrica short Story competition is 2500 words. Entries exceeding this limit will be disqualified.
- Submission Format:
- All entries must be typed and formatted in a legible font (e.g., Times New Roman, Arial) with a font size of 12 points.
- Entries should be double-spaced, and each page must be numbered.
- Language:
- Submissions must be written in English.
- Originality:
- Entries must be original works and should not have been previously published, including online platforms, blogs, or print publications.
- Plagiarized entries will be automatically disqualified.
- Deadline:
- The deadline for submission is September 31st 2023.
- Late entries will not be accepted.
- Entry Fee:
- There is an entry fee of $49 for the LinesfromAfrica Short Story Competition. It is free to enter.
- Judging Criteria:
- Stories will be evaluated based on creativity, originality, writing style, character development, plot structure, and adherence to the theme.
- The decision of the judging panel is final and cannot be contested.
- Prizes:
- The top three stories will receive cash prizes as follows:
- First Place: $5000
- Second Place: $2500
- Third Place: $1000
- 15 additional exceptional writers go home with $100 each
- In addition, the winning stories will be featured on the LinesfromAfrica website and promoted through their social media channels.
- The top three stories will receive cash prizes as follows:
- Rights and Permissions:
- By entering the competition, participants grant LinesfromAfrica.org the right to publish the winning stories on their website and social media platforms.
- The copyright of the stories remains with the respective authors, who retain the right to publish their work elsewhere after the competition.

- Each participant can submit up to three original poems.
- The maximum length for each poem is 40 lines, including stanza breaks.

- Originality:
- Poems must be original works and should not have been previously published in any form, including online platforms, blogs, or print publications.
- Plagiarized poems will be automatically disqualified.
- Submission Format:

- Poems should be single-spaced, and each poem must start on a new page.
